One of Rioja’s best kept secrets are the wines made by Juan Peñagaricano Akutain. Working exclusively with Tempranillo and Garnacha since 1975. The wines carry all of the signature structure, savoriness and freshness of the Rioja Alavesa region. Jaun studied with two of the greatest traditionalists in the region, CVNE and La Rioja Alta. The property is a small 6.5ha in size and he works out of an old horse stable converted to a barn. All his wines are fermented with native yeasts and harvested by hand. The Cosecha is mostly Tempranillo with a bit of Garnacha, macerated for a short time and aged in fiberglass vats before bottling without any fining or filtering.
